The product documentation also describes JavaScript rendering, saving and opening crawls with a licence, scheduling, and integrations with Google Analytics, Search Console, and PageSpeed Insights. Those are capabilities, not proof that every site needs them. A useful configuration starts with the question being investigated and records the start point, allowed scope, exclusions, user agent, rendering mode, and time of the crawl.

Its documentation also describes scheduling, JavaScript rendering settings, allow and disallow rules, and controls for sites that an external crawler cannot initially reach.

The durable advantage of this model is continuity. A configured audit can re-run and preserve comparable project results without an operator opening a desktop application for every crawl. That does not make the findings correct by default, and it does not remove the need to export evidence. It changes who runs the infrastructure and where the history is retained.

The Crawled Pages report exposes page-level information and filters so a finding can be traced back to affected URLs. Semrush also documents re-auditing pages after a change. Choose one, both, or neither yet

Choose Screaming Frog only when an accountable operator needs detailed crawls, targeted URL verification, and an archive retained outside a vendor account. The operating cost is discipline: crawl scope, schedules, exports, comparisons, and follow-up all need an owner.

Choose Semrush Site Audit only when scheduled hosted crawls and project history solve the actual operating problem. The crawler must be able to reach the site, the configuration must match the intended scope, and evidence that matters beyond the account should be exported. Do not buy the hosted model merely because a dashboard is easier to open.

Use both when the hosted audit owns recurring detection and the local crawler owns detailed investigation and targeted verification. Select one system of record for open issues. Otherwise two tools can create duplicate findings with different names and severity labels, leading to reconciliation work instead of fixes.

Choose neither paid option yet when nobody has completed a basic audit or can act on findings. Treat issue labels and scores as evidence, not verdicts

A crawler applies general rules without knowing every intentional decision, business constraint, or third-party dependency. A noindex, redirect, missing description, or blocked path can be deliberate. Review the affected URLs and the reason for the configuration before changing production. Record accepted exceptions so the same finding does not restart the debate during every audit.

No crawl score proves rankings, real-user speed, accessibility conformance, security, or legal compliance. Rankings depend on signals beyond a technical crawl. Automated accessibility checks cover only part of the needed evaluation. A site audit is not a vulnerability scan or penetration test. Privacy and legal obligations require their own qualified review.

Keep a dated evidence folder containing the scope, configuration, export, accepted exceptions, changes, and verification result. A hosted account can be closed and a laptop can be replaced. Evidence stored in an owner-controlled location remains useful regardless of which tool produced it.
